As operating system and computer application developers have devised more sophisticated methods to prevent unauthorized access, hackers have turned to social engineering as the leading method to hack into systems. E-mail phishing has over the years become the greatest security risk to us and our clients, and so we take e-mail security very seriously. We have devised a four-pronged approach to thwart e-mail security threats:

1. Anti-Malware / Anti-Phishing filters: we employ AppRiver SecureTide as a first layer of security to prevent malware and phishing e-mails from every reaching your employees’ inboxes. AppRiver SecureTide prevents the bulk of this e-mail from ever bothering your users — however no mail filter is perfect and thousands of new e-mail accounts are compromised on a daily basis, and so we employ three additional layers of protection.
   
   
2. Antivirus / DNS protection: our antivirus software will block nearly all malware transmitted via e-mail. Our antivirus solutions also include DNS protection to block access to malware / phishing links in case your employees click on malicious links accidentally.
   
   
3. Multi-factor authentication: given the prevalence of e-mail attacks, we require all tenants to enable MFA (multi-factor authentication) for webmail logins. This way, even if an attacker obtains your e-mail password, there is little they can do with it without also having access to the device on which you have MFA enabled.
   
   
4. Employee training: often overlooked by our competitors, we include employee training for e-mail security as part of our onboarding process. Employing a staff well-versed with e-mail phishing can be a very effective line of defense as users knowledgeable about e-mail phishing are unlikely to click malicious links in the first place.

For business e-mail, we generally recommend Office 365 or G Suite which have the most robust office suites and generally the best spam reputations, keeping your e-mail in your recipients’ inboxes more often. For businesses on a budget, Zoho Mail and Rackspace are good alternatives.
